From the Heart: The Truth about Fairy Tales

I received a letter from Malaysia informing me that the deceased King of Iran wants me to inherit his royal fortune. All I need to do to claim it is send money to an anonymous post office box in England to pay the lawyers who will release the funds to those who have faith in the windfall. You, too, have probably received one of the many scams announcing that some wealthy, famous, royal, or spiritual person has stashed away a fortune, now available to an elite group. Your luck will be proven when … [Read more...]

From the Heart: The Secret Voice

This year, like every year, ABC will air The Ten Commandments around Easter and Passover. Originally released in 1956, the movie remains a perennial favorite, dominating the ratings whenever it shows. Even though the dialogue is campy, the special effects old school, and the elder Moses' long white beard totally fake, the film holds up. It is an inspirational classic, replete with meaning and loved through generations. I purchased The Ten Commandments DVD and listened to the commentary by … [Read more...]

During an overnight airplane flight, I perused the entertainment selections and discovered the audio book Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte. I liked what I heard and found Ms. LaPorte to be an articulate, poetic exponent of living a juicy, authentic life. She had my attention. One of the ways to recognize your talent and passion, LaPorte suggests, is to consider what other people have criticized you for. I had heard, "What you thought was wrong with you may be what's right with you," … [Read more...]

From the Heart: A Tale of Two Fathers

My coaching client Gregg told me that he was trying to figure out his identity as a husband and father. "I grew up with two fathers," Gregg explained. "One was my biological father, and the other the man my mother married after she divorced my father for cheating on her. "My first father was a real player, a high-roller," Gregg went on. "He loved to make money and spend it. He was generous with me and everyone. When I saw him after the divorce, he always had a new car and a different … [Read more...]

From the Heart: Trust Your Talent

Many years ago a young Kansas City artist struggled to get his cartoons published in city newspapers. His offerings, however, were met with rejection after rejection. "Forget it," editors told him. "You have no talent. Get a real job." But the artist felt that he did have talent and he refused to compromise his career. Finally the artist found himself holed up in a mice-infested garage, penniless. Bored, he began to sketch his environment, especially one little mouse who ran back and forth on … [Read more...]

From the Heart: Bring It On!

We have arrived at December 2012, the month prophesied as a turning point in human history. Much ado has been devoted to the December 21 solstice date. The Mayan calendar is said to end here; some soothsayers predict the end of the world; others predict the beginning. Groups are gathering at the Great Pyramid in Egypt, Machu Picchu and sacred sites around the planet. All year people have been asking me, "What do you think will happen on December 21st?" I recently picked up a hitchhiker who asked … [Read more...]

While staying at a hotel, I signed up for wireless Internet service. To my disappointment, the service kept going on and off. A call to tech support did not help much. Finally the technician concluded there must have been some interference near my room. He suggested I change rooms. So, at 1 a.m. I packed my gear and trudged to another hotel room. I logged onto the wireless service and found that the reception in this room was no better. Stymied, I scanned for other wireless services in the … [Read more...]

The Guru in Your iPod

While watching the documentary film Steve Jobs -- Billion Dollar Hippy, I was tickled to learn that as a young adult Jobs was significantly influenced by Baba Ram Dass and his book Be Here Now. I also credit Ram Dass as one of the most valued mentors in my life. He led millions of spiritual seekers to higher awareness and is considered by many to be the "Father of the New Age." As destiny would have it, eight years ago Ram Dass moved to Maui, where he now lives a few miles from my home. I see … [Read more...]

Sitting on an airplane in flight, I was listening to an inspiring audio seminar on my iPod. Then the in-flight movie came on. Since I was in a bulkhead seat and the projection screen was just a few feet from me at eye level, it was almost impossible not to watch the movie. So I kept listening to the audio seminar with my ears and my mind, while the movie paraded before my eyes. The film, a predictable teenage romantic comedy, was easy to figure out even without sound. So, while I was … [Read more...]

Thank You for Eating the Cake

One of the great defining moments of my life came when I was in college. For about seven years, I had been practicing Orthodox Judaism , a very meaningful path for me. I came to a point, however, when the rituals had become rote and dry for me. On one holiday, a fast day, I was very hungry. But I feared to eat because I might go to hell for violating the religion's rules. After struggling with the choice, I came to a striking realization: fear is not a good enough reason to do a religious … [Read more...]

The Paint Can of Life

paint_brush

I recently painted a deck on my house. I enjoy painting, a meditation in being present that doesn't require much thought but lots of attention. If you tend to live in your head, paint something. Your hands may get dirty but your mind will stay clean. With just a few planks left to color I noticed I was almost out of paint. Looking back and forth between the paint can and the unfinished boards, I wondered if I would have enough paint to finish the job. I dipped my brush in the remaining paint … [Read more...]

All How You Look at It

I have been a vegetarian for many years for all kinds of reasons: health, morality, energy, ecology, and on and on. I don't think everyone should be a vegetarian, and I have never proselytized. I think everyone should follow their own body's guidance toward food that works for them. I just know what works for me. When Dee and I grew a family of dogs, we decided to feed them meat. That was a big decision for us, since we had never had meat in the house. But we love our "kids," and we want them … [Read more...]

From the Heart: Mechanics and Miracles

crop-circle

I have long been fascinated by the phenomenon of crop circles. In 1994 I made a pilgrimage to England to study the mysterious formations, appearing consistently now for over 20 years. While the glyphs have been the subject of controversy and some have been fabricated by hoaxers, an intelligent study of them points sharply toward the expression of interdimensional intelligence. (For an illuminating overview of the state of the art in the crop circle phenomenon, watch the DVD What on Earth? -- … [Read more...]

Good Enough to be True

When I began to teach classes on spiritual principles, I devoted some time at the end of each class meeting to pray for students and their loved ones. One woman asked the group to pray for the continued health of her sister, who had had cancer, but the disease was now in remission. At that time I had not heard the term "in remission, so I asked her what it meant. "It means that the disease went away for now, but it might come back," she explained. The explanation made no sense to me then, … [Read more...]

The New Plastics

In a classic scene in The Graduate, young Ben is at his college graduation party when a friend of his parents takes him aside and earnestly whispers, "plastics." That industry will be the next rage, the fellow hints, and if Ben is smart he'll get in on the ground floor. Fast forward to 2012. A young acupuncturist phones my Hay House Radio show, "Get Real," and confesses her fear that she will not be able to earn enough money to provide for her family, including her little child. I whisper to … [Read more...]
