Feline Wisdom: Welcome, Warmth!

cat_calico

Here in Minnesota, it feels like the winter just wouldn't end -- it even snowed in May! Although I enjoy getting cozy with the kitties and a nice hot cup of tea, I'm ready to venture outdoors without a coat and gloves. Now that the sun is shining, my toes are painted and I can drive with my car windows down, I look to my cats as models for truly enjoying the warmer months. Cats are excellent sunbathers. Back in the '80s, I'd slather on Hawaiian Tropic oil and spend hours by the pool. Now … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: A Mother’s Day letter from my cats

cat_sleep2

Dear Mom, Mother's Day is this month and, because we love and care about you, we have a few points we'd like you to consider: 1. You're perfect just the way you are. Sometimes we see you worry about silly things and we think you should worry less and nap more. It works for us. And we'll even nap with you - what a deal! 2. We love it when you let us sleep in your chair. Even when you need to sit there, you never move us - you just balance your butt on the very edge of the chair so you … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Listen to Your Body

cat_sleep2

I find I often make choices based on my schedule or to-do list instead of listening to my body's wisdom. I'm pretty certain I'm not alone in this one. Sometimes choices based on schedules and lists are necessary - I'd certainly never blow off a job interview because I felt like I needed a nap; however, within the times of the day that really are flexible (despite what my planner pad says), I can certainly adjust my activities. A cat is a master at listening to what his body needs and promptly … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Be Resourceful

cat_play

Have you ever had that "stuck" feeling? Like you're just not quite sure how to move forward and you're a little afraid to move at all, for fear you'll make the "wrong" choice? I know there have been times when I've found myself in that position and, honestly, at those times I felt paralyzed. Sometimes I moved ahead and sometimes -- again, because of fear -- I did not and I occasionally wonder what would have happened if I'd just taken a chance. Part of the reason I felt paralyzed is because I … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: What My Cats Have Taught Me About Love

cat_box

In February, many of us are buying poetic little cards, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, and proclaiming the deepest affections for our loved ones. Although it's wonderful to honor love on Valentine's Day, I believe these feelings should be celebrated every day, and not just with those whom we consider that "special someone." My cats totally get this. They don't need an official day to act more sweetly -- or more cranky, for that matter -- to me or anyone else. Cats may not have the opposable … [Read more...]

Holistic Healing for Happier Cats

Swanson,-Sue

Many people embrace a holistic approach to medical care for themselves, but few may realize that pets benefit equally from healing therapies that favor dietary changes, flower remedies and Chinese medicine over the commonly prescribed "silver bullets" like antibiotics and steroids. Dr. Susan Swanson owns the The Cat Care Clinic in Mahtomedi, MN, and she is one of the early pioneers in holistic care for cats in the Midwest. Dr. Swanson's interest in holistic care for cats was born out of her … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Embrace the Season

cat_restful

In Minnesota, it's officially cold outside and the holiday season is in full swing. This time of year, I sometimes find myself complaining about the frigid temperatures and stressing about my massive Christmas card list, buying the perfect gifts, and baking 120 dozen treats. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit about the treats, but you get the point. Meanwhile, my cats leisurely nap under the tree, snuggle in cozy blankets and romp in and out of gift boxes. What's wrong with this picture? Clue: It's not … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Get Over it!

cat_tongue

Editor's note: Angie Bailey's Edge column "Feline Wisdom" made the finals for Best Online Column in the Cat Writers' Association Awards! The awards ceremony is at the Cat Writers' Association Conference in Los Angeles in November. I can only speak for myself, but have a sneaking suspicion I'm not alone: Sometimes I have a hard time letting things go. And by "letting things go," I mean putting a halt to feeling guilty or self-conscious about situations over which I have absolutely no control … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Unpredictably Flexible

cat_active_kitten

I've always felt content around order and routine. My children sometimes kid me about my lack of spontaneity and can usually predict my reaction to most anything. I'm working on it, though. For me, routine has always felt safe and comfortable and so I've found myself adopting some pretty predictable behaviors. I love lists and schedules and feel a little woozy sometimes when I veer off the prescribed plan for the day. Do I like these behaviors? Like I mentioned above, I find them safe and … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Rest

bailey

No one has to remind a cat to get plenty of rest. When kitty feels tired, she drops what she is doing, curls up and relaxes or dozes until her body feels ready to resume activity. Felines are masters at listening to subtle mental and physical cues. In a world where more is better, most humans still have a difficult time jumping off life's treadmill and getting the rest their bodies require. Rest doesn't always mean sleep (although sleep is very important); rest means taking both mental and … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Curiosity

kitten_box

Every time I sit on the floor, ready to wrap presents, create a craft project, or unpack a parcel, my three cats magically appear. They want to investigate every part of whatever I am doing and aren't shy about sticking their cute little noses right in the middle of it. It's completely true: cats are curious. Anyone who's had the pleasure of spending any amount of time around a feline knows this fact. I think curiosity is a great attribute; after all, how can we learn anything new or stretch … [Read more...]

An Author’s Road to Self-Discovery

barnes

For as long as I can remember, there have been two constants in my life - my love of cats and my love of books. I was an extremely quiet and reserved being who much preferred to live vicariously through the endless mountains of books I owned than draw attention to myself. My cats were content to leave me in peace -- as long as I provided a soft voice and warm lap, prying me out of my shell was not of importance to them. The adults in my life, of course, did not have the same courtesy or … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom: Be Authentic

cat_tongue

In recent years, I've felt an increasing importance to live authentically. I am who I am. In the past I cared (too much) about what people thought of me and made some choices based on whether or not I thought they might judge me harshly. And I'm talking about silly things: the music I enjoy, my sometimes dark and overly silly sense of humor, my love of wildly dancing in the kitchen to the Bee Gees. I thought perhaps some people would think me less spiritual if they knew that in the same hour, … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom | Ask For What You Want

bailey

Cats know what they want...and they aren't afraid to ask for it! Those of you who share your life with a cat know exactly to what I am referring. They aren't shy about letting us know exactly when it's meal time, if we've slacked on litter box scooping, and they pound on any closed door standing between you and them. They ask for what they want and they usually get it. As humans, we sometimes shy away from asking for our own desires because of many reasons, including self-worth and just plain … [Read more...]

Feline Wisdom | Play

cat_play_kitten

How much of your day is spent "playing?" Really -- think about it. In a world where working overtime is applauded and rushing our kids from activity to activity has become the norm, who's got time to relax, laugh, and truly enjoy life? One of the reasons I am writing about this subject is to remind myself of this very thing. I spend much of my day working from home. I love what I do, but I sometimes become driven and look past a game with my kids or a walk in the woods because there's always … [Read more...]
