MINNEAPOLIS – The new Sports & Recreation Expo for Women, coming March 24-25 to the Minneapolis Convention Center, will feature hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest in sports, fitness and recreational gear and equipment, clothing and related accessories, plus non-stop seminars to help attendees stay at the top of their game. With industry experts and women sports participants, the show is intended to inspire women to achieve their goals, and find even more fun and challenges in their recreational activities.

"Women are a very important segment of the fitness and recreation market," says Robin Kocina, president of Mid-America Events & Expos which is producing the event. "You can’t pick up a mainstream women’s magazine without seeing a section on fitness. Even sporting goods stores, which once catered strictly to men, now have equipment and clothing suitable for women, as well."

Natural foods restaurant opening

CHANHASSEN, Minn. – The Golden Chalice restaurant, featuring an all-natural, gourmet menu of dishes that are gluten-free, low-carb and low glycemic, has opened in Chanhassen at Market Square. The restaurant is founded by Eden Prairie’s Debbie Johnson, a best-selling author of Think Yourself Thin and regular columnist in Edge Life magazine.

Johnson spent 20 years developing these recipes, and has chosen only the best for the public to experience. Only the healthiest oils are used, and the menu includes raw vegan, vegetarian and grass-fed meat selections. No addictive substances – alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar, or even chocolate – will be offered. However, for chocolate lovers out there, The Golden Chalice will serve "I Can’t Believe It’s Not Chocolate" desserts made with a secret carob blend.

Taking this eclectic menu to a new level, Executive Chef Jimmy Golombecki has been in the culinary business for seven years and traveled over 27 countries absorbing every culture’s flavor. He is best known for his influence as Executive Chef at the Mackinac Island Resort in Mackinac, Mich. Golombecki’s expertise continues in French gourmet culinary techniques accented with the flavor profiles of various countries.

To accompany such delectable fare, The Golden Chalice also provides sanctuary with an uplifting art and music gallery. It is a place "where food is a healing art and art is food for soul."

Resting "at the Well"

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. – The Benedictine Center in Maplewood, Minn., is offering a series of Monday evening workshops called "Women at the Well," from March 13 through April 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost for all four sessions is $25. Participants will reflect on three important themes that will deepen their connection to life: feminine spirituality in everyday life; listening with the ear of one’s heart; and the lessons in John 13: 5-15 that talks about the true purpose of service. The final session will include a Lenten ritual of the washing of feet.

These workshops will be led by Mary Del Vecchio, who addresses the issue of loneliness and isolation felt by many 21st century women and gives them an opportunity to connect with others and share their stories. Del Vecchio is on the adjunct faculty at the College of St. Catherine. She has a doctorate in psychology, an master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, a master’s degree in theology and a pastoral minister’s certificate. She is also a Benedictine oblate at St. Paul’s Monastery and does Healing Touch.

Night of the Butterfly

"Night of the Butterfly," a night on the town to benefit Chrysalis, a non-profit agency that assists women and girls to live healthier lives, will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at International Market Square in Minneapolis. The annual fundraising event is presented by Target, and with additional generous support from Xcel Energy, RMS McGladrey, Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P., BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota, D’Amico Catering, Mpls/St Paul Magazine, and Rocco Altobelli.

Champagne reception and auction preview, an invitation-only event, will begin at 6 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, live auction and entertainment, all open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by Robyne Robinson, FOX 9 anchor, and music will be presented by renowned local entertainer GB Leighton.
