Therapeutic Coaching

How is Therapeutic Coaching® different from Life Coaching? How is transformation different from accountability? How is pulling a weed out from its root different than snipping off its top?

By definition, Life Coaching is a practice that seeks to help clients determine and achieve personal goals. Life coaches use multiple methods that help clients with the process of setting and reaching goals. It has roots in executive coaching, which draws on techniques developed in management consultant and leadership training. Life coaching draws inspiration from disciplines including sociology, psychology, human development, career counseling and mentoring. There is no specific scientific field of techniques of change assigned to Life Coaching. The Life Coach works with the client in the now and in the future. For most individuals, Life Coaching serves as a means to stay motivated and be accountable for behaviors that will help them reach their goals. For many, it has been a powerful modality for improving their lives.

Therapeutic Coaching® is a model of coaching that allows the client to experience all of the above and release and/or transform the past. In addition, the client can change and transform any problem, unwanted feelings or behaviors.

Within this model, the Therapeutic Coach® is able to investigate client issues/problems and facilitate the release, transformation and change of the problems into resources and accomplish the desired behavior in any or all areas of their life. The Therapeutic Coach® becomes certified as a master practitioner in NLP, HNLP and Hypnosis. These skills afford the client and practitioner an array of choices of how to approach the problem, by discovering the root and by applying a collection of techniques to attain the chosen outcome. NLP derives some of its principles, techniques and applications from the work of people like Virginia Satir, Fritz Perls, Milton Erickson, Carl Jung and Robert Dilts, to name a few. HNLP (Humanistic Neurolinguistic Psychology) created by John Overdurf and Julie Silverthorn embodies the metaphysical and spiritual nature of the work. This is best noted in the techniques that facilitate a client experiencing all possibilities, including the role of their higher consciousness in their work. Whatever a client holds as spiritual beliefs can be incorporated in their work.

The Therapeutic Coach® is in the business of transformation at the deepest level, and this coach is skilled in the the fields of motivation and change.

During these cold winter months, it is refreshing to think of the optimism of spring. This season brings us promise, beauty and a venue to shed the layers of clothing we have been wearing and leap out into the fresh air to explore all of nature’s changes. Our gardens begin to bloom with the seeds we planted in the fall and the colors begin to fill in the canvas of our bountiful earth. As we observe the results of our toil in the fall, we soon begin to notice what is growing along with our flowers and greenery – weeds. Our first thought is to get rid of them. They weren’t part of the design. Some of us snip the weeds so we can no longer see them, while experienced gardeners know that the only way to prevent the weed from returning is to take the root out and plant grass seed in its place. The result: no more weeds to disturb the beauty of our canvas as it was intended.

Like weeds, our problems, unwanted feelings and behaviors all have roots. Many modalities will snip off the tentacles or spokes of that problem, with the result being the return of that pesky behavior or feeling: the weeds are back. The skills learned in Therapeutic Coaching® afford the coach all the tools and method of finding and removing the root of the problem weeds. With facilitation by the Therapeutic Coach®, the client is then able to replace the root of the problem with an outcome (behavior or feeling) that serves them to continue to grow and bloom as our gardens do.

Some of the skills the Therapeutic Coach® has in their toolbox are: rapport, calibration/sensory acuity, strategy elicitation, emotional intelligence, eye accessing, reframing, goal-setting, anchoring and setting outcomes, to name a few. Along with these skills are techniques found in NLP and Hypnosis.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a communication model that through language, the practitioner learns how the problem is structured for that person. Knowing the structure of a problem affords us the knowledge of taking the problem apart and replacing it with a desired positive outcome. This is accomplished through techniques that include changing beliefs, values, installing new self-image, relationship resolution, healing the past, modeling excellence and so much more. When working with a Therapeutic Coach® the client does not have to relive the unpleasantness of the issue. Through elegance and expertise, the Therapeutic Coach® has the ability to pace and lead the client through the identification and investigation of the issue while the client remains resourceful and supported. After the problem is identified, the solution begins with the application of a technique(s). The technique changes the neural network where the problem was stored and the client is at the point of embracing their outcome.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool for transformation used for a variety of issues that clients present. With hypnosis, we are able to establish deep rapport between the conscious and unconscious mind. This relationship is key to the client, because this further allows them to function as a whole mind in their life, which will always give the best results. Hypnosis gives the client an opportunity to explore themselves deeper in a relaxed, comfortable and safe method. The Therapeutic Coach® has the skills necessary to facilitate trance in an effective way that is tailored to the client’s present needs and desires. Problems are transformed and/or released and outcomes are achieved.

At the appropriate time in their transformation, the client can experience alignment and goal-setting. This is an active, fun process where the client is able to fully realize and associate to their goal while they begin their tailor-made journey to achieving their goal free of old issues and problems, ready to wear their new behavior and realize their desired outcome.
