Tools for Radical Democracy

MINNEAPOLIS – Paul Getsos, co-author of Tools for Radical Democracy: How to Organize for Power in your Community, will do a book reading at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 2, at Magers & Quinn Bookstore, 3038 Hennepin Ave. S. Minneapolis. Tools for Radical Democracy is an essential resource for grassroots organizers and leaders, students of activism and advocacy, and anyone trying to increase the civic participation of ordinary people. This event will be an interactive session of Paul Getsos reading passages from the book and tackling various questions from you.

In Tools for Radical Democracy, Getsos and co-author Minieri share stories and tools from the challenge of building their award-winning community-led organization. By training community leaders and conducting campaigns that changed public policy, they delivered concrete results to tens of thousands of people. The book contains keen insights for using technology effectively, building more powerful alliances, and engaging in the social justice movement.

Power to Heal the Body

Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain

MINNEAPOLIS – Matthieu Ricard, a Buddhist monk and best-selling author, photographer and translator to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will present "Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: Cultivating Inner Conditions for Genuine Happiness" at the annual Ruth Stricker Mind-Body Lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the Mayo Memorial Auditorium, 425 Delaware St. SE, Minneapolis, presented by the Center for Spirituality & Healing of the University of Minnesota.

More than 35 years ago, Matthieu Ricard left a promising career in cellular genetics to study Buddhism in the Himalayas. Now drawing upon his recent writings (Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill), his own research into brain plasticity and cognitive neuropsychology, and his work with neuroscientists and Buddhist practitioners at the Mind and Life Institute (co-founded by the Dalai Lama), Ricard examines the interconnecting relationship between meditation, brain circuitry and emotional balance.

Women Healing Conference

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Hazelden’s Women Healing® conferences, which help women in recovery integrate the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous into their lives to restore balance and health in their personal, family and career challenges, will take place April 18-19 at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott, 2020 American Blvd. E., in Bloomington, Minn. The first day of the event is for professionals, and the second day is for women in recovery. A Twelve Step meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the hotel for women attendees. Oprah favorite at Borders

WOODBURY, Minn. – Oprah favorite, O Magazine columnist and bestselling author Martha Beck will be at Borders in Woodbury at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, to promote her new book Steering by Starlight. Martha Beck, Ph.D., is a writer and "life coach" who specializes in helping people design satisfying and meaningful life experiences. World Tai Chi & Qigong Day

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The 10th anniversary of World T’ai Chi & Qigong Day will feature internationally known author and qigong master Chunyi Lin at a free public event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Normandale Community College, 9700 France Ave. S., Bloomington.
