Finding Balance: The Two Sides of Libra

2530

Fall Equinox, usually September 21, marks the beginning of Libra, the astrological sign designated by the scales of balance and justice. For this one day, light and dark are equal, and day and night are 12 hours each. Libra is rightfully associated with balance, fairness, equality and the importance of relationships.

moonrabbitIn this Cardinal Air sign, we are halfway around the Zodiac, exactly opposite Aries; because Cardinal is always active, here the activity is focused on the interpersonal, including all primary relationships. Aries begins spring by focusing on the concept of “I” and Libra begins falls by focusing on “we.”

Libra is ruled by Venus, who in Taurus is very concerned with beauty and acquisition, but here is concerned with love, friendship, harmony and getting along. Libra individuals struggle to balance the “I” with the “we” and often make many compromises in relationships, trying always to be fair and balanced. The problem they often encounter is that other people don’t have the same awareness and the Libra bends over backwards making accommodations which aren’t reciprocated. Libra for the most part does not like fighting or discord, so conflicts can be ignored or stifled and relationships can become resentful and unfulfilling. A major lesson of Libra is to find a balance between their own wants and needs while being sensitive to the needs of others.

Libra is an air sign, and the world of ideas is very important. Learning, conversing and getting many points of view is important to Libra. Making decisions about things, on the other hand, can be quite difficult. One Libra woman explained to me what happened when she was with friends who were arguing about politics. If someone made a really good argument about something, she would understand and agree with them. Then if another person disagreed and made another really good argument, she would also agree with them. She was disturbed by her own ability to see two sides to an argument, but this sign has given us many great diplomats and peacemakers.

Living successfully under the sign of Libra involves finding a way to stay at the center of two scales of balance, rather than identifying too strongly with one side or the other. It’s all about finding the balance.
