Volare!

867

“You need not go to heaven to see God; nor need you speak loud, as if God were far away; nor need you cry for wings like a dove to fly to Him; Only be in silence, and you will come upon God within yourself.” — Saint Teresa of Avila

A light breeze singes
The warm air as it passes through
Igniting a whispered longing
In my heart.
Oh that I were a bird
Able to touch the ceiling
Of the world!
How gladly would I sing
Your praises
If I could be but closer to You.
The maturing sun lifts my spirits
And beckons me skyward
Yet this earth-bound form
Has clipped my wings.
In my dreams I can fly,
Create worlds, do anything
I wish: such bliss!
If this breeze could form
Into wind
Wild, like in a storm,
And lift me airborne
My soul the sweetest song
Would sing!
