Tarot from Conscience (or the Traveling Moth)
A space for tarot reflection for the day, week, or moment it comes across your screen. Each of these is reworked intentionally for The Edge, from the egregore of GroupTarot’s Card of the Week, to center education, diversity, and intuition.

Friends, I’m going to be vulnerable.
I don’t know what to do to support the Ukranian people.
I don’t know what to do to stop the Russian invasion.
I don’t know how to stop greedy people and leaders being greedy.
Consequently, writing this article today was tough. And this is exactly the kind of days the cards are made for; helping us out with some guidance, because looking out my window, I see beauty. Small buds are starting to form on the maple tree, the laurel stays green year round and is taller than some trees! I have another green tree/bush next to it that I keep saying I should take a leaf of over to Portland Nursery and find out what it is. It stays mostly green too, with just some leaves turning a deep crimson.
My point of view was largely forged at age eight when my dad was in a freak accident that left his physical body severely disabled. Consequently, when the Broadway musical Rent came out, lyrics like, “I live each moment as my last” rang deeply true for me.
Which is a double edged sword.
On one hand it keeps me/us in the moment, able to find beauty everywhere, even in the shittiest of situations. I don’t want to die with hate in my heart. On the other hand, it can be harder to practice indigenous philosophy of planning 7 Generations ahead. This moment could be my last! I’ve had a hysterectomy so won’t have direct descendants! With how far we’re already into a mass extinction event – which started long before Covid – no one will be around anyway! We’ve been losing species at an alarming rate since before I was the President of my high school Environmental Club in the 90’s. If this is news to you, here are a few sources to start with:
From Yale – I attended their Environmental Justice Summit last year. Excellent, affordable, online, I highly recommend it.
From World Wildlife Foundation
From the BBC
This is a much longer preamble than usual, but there’s a lot on my heart and soul today, so maybe that’s the same for you. It’s almost always helpful to know we’re not alone. If you need someone to talk to, you can now dial 988 and automatically be taken to the National Suicide Prevention line.
And with that Modern Witch Tarot by Lisa Sterle gives us two cards:
Three of Swords inverted and the Queen of Pentacles.
Well doesn’t that just encompass everything I’ve just been writing about???
When you/we are hurting, in pain, crying, dealing with heartache and/or loss, go to one who comforts and nourishes you. Whether that is a mother or mother-figure, Goddess, Queen, go to one who will hold you gently.
This 100% may be yourself. Remember that Magician who is also an underlying energy today? We have everything we need inside us, it’s just sometimes work to bring it out, or trust that we can nurture ourselves, especially when we’re hurting badly. It’s hard to see ourselves as queens – which reside in all bodies regardless of gender – or royals, when we’re a blubbering mess of inky, oily, sticky pain and hurt.
Also, don’t expect Black women to fix everything! Stacey Abrams, Kamala Harris, Kathleen Kleever, Claudette Colvin, and sooooooo many more have and are doing amazing work. Join them. Amplify their messages. Do the work. Celebrate Black Power. Sure the Queen is sitting in the card, but this is taking a break, listening to the needs of all the life She helps cares for in Her world.
In Her world. In your world. We have to stay aware of our sphere of influence, especially on days like this and on days when we’re hurting. Everything outside our sphere of influence may try to get in and keep this 3 of Swords plummeting, spiraling.
We can change that. We can stop the spiral.
Change your thoughts, change your words;
change your words, change your actions;
change your actions, change the world;
but it all begins with your thoughts.
~ Gabriel Halpern my first yoga teacher at DePaul University Theatre School.
Part of what is captivating me about this 3 of Swords depiction is that there is rain in the background, cleansing marvelous rain, and what looks like oil drips, crude and killing the environment, dripping from the sextuple pierced heart; every entrance wound has an exit wound and none of the swords share an entrance or exit point. Which also brings us back to our six twos in today’s date.
Our queen is surrounded by roses – and queens of course may be in all bodies and all genders. If you prefer to substitute Royal, please do! She/they listens to the land, the animals around, the air. Feet are grounded and eyes are closed, dress a warm orange tying into the sacral or second chakara. This is an invitation to listen deeply to your gut and the world around you. How does your environment make you feel? If it brings you pain, why stay? Examine your motives and if they are not healthy for you and the whole ecosystem/community, you can make a change.
Remember to breathe.
Remember to ground.
Remember to eat good healthy nourishing food.
Remember to honor your body’s needs.
Remember to give thanks for all the life around you even when/if you are hurt.
It just might be a balm to your soul.
