Hello Friends!
I am back from Beltaine in the Grove.
FYI, it’s one month until rates go up (July 1) for the Writers and Creatives Retreat I’m co-facilitating with Rio Abajo Rio, and two months until registration closes (Aug 1). I love writing from my backyard. Gentle breezes make my maple’s shady dapple change positions, and my eyes & soul love all the different shades of green I receive simply by sitting outside typing. I counted 30, easily, within view.
I love all the unique hues the world gives us when she is allowed to be her diverse self.
I love how trees will share the canopy to allow everyone to have access to Sun.
Card of the Week was chosen a bit differently.
This weekend, a friend and I attended a Big Gay Wedding, which was a vibrant, loving, colorful, demonstration with legitimate queer weddings, on legal public spaces outside a hate-mongering church. I did my research and under their beliefs, murder for sodomites is included. I completely disapprove and was happy to stand in the sun under a rainbow umbrella with folx who know love is love.
Parents who love their trans children were the main organizers, and there were dozens of friends and strangers coming to share joy and love and protection.
Unsurprisingly, I brought Pride Tarot with me, to offer one card pulls to attendees and the newly weds. They were so delightfully received. Marvelous music, conversation, and cupcakes were enjoyed. After a few hours, many bubbles, drag queens, dancing, and happy honking car horns, with a few brief tense moments, we left to return across the river.
I pulled a card randomly towards the beginning of our time merrily marrying on the pavement:
V – The Messenger

and thought to myself, how perfect.
The wedding demonstration was all about the message. All about love triumphing over fear and hate.
All about the reminder that queer and trans folx have been around since time immemorial and we’ll continue to celebrate our authentic selves.
All about queer and trans Gen Z and Millennials being loud and proud, marrying publicly, in ways I certainly didn’t dream possible when I was their age. What beautiful shifts over the last twenty years!
As I sat down to write CotW, I realized, there wasn’t a need to choose a different card, The Messenger had already been chosen, and is perfect.
Wherever you are in life, whether you read my column for personal or professional purposes, your message is important. What you have to say, your lived experiences, deserve to be amplified. We learn by teaching others and from observing the choices & consequences of our community.
You deserve to know what it feels like to have throngs of people cheering you on, supporting – and respectfully questioning – your points of view. Your opinions. Your new information. Especially if you are someone whose voice has systematically been silenced or marginalized, over the years.
Traditionally, this card is the Hierophant, oft depicted with two kneeling supplicants quite a bit below the Pope or priest. There’s a message in their body language and a reminder: speak to and with people rather than at or over them. Use language that is understood by those with whom you’re conversing – remember, mass used to be in Latin, purposefully keeping the masses ignorant. Notice if people’s eyes glaze over, or if they become noticeably bored.
Similarly, if someone is talking over you, you have options!
You may leave the conversation.
You may say, please talk with me, not at me.
You may say, I am confused, can you explain it a different way?
Remember, if they can’t explain it differently, then they likely don’t understand the concept as well as they purport, or have a superiority complex you don’t need to engage with.
It is not a reflection on your intelligence.
I’m going to repeat that because it’s important: it is not a reflection on your intelligence.
We don’t get angry at a turtle that can’t climb a tree, or an owl that can’t swim, correct? We don’t expect everyone in foreign countries to speak English or berate ourselves for not fully understanding the language of Snake, right?
We continue learning, being curious, teaching by example.
Your message and your platform, however large or modest, is important.
And you get to choose.
What messages will you amplify? Whose stories will you share? Whose stories are yours to share? Not all of them are, and sometimes we’re asked to remove messages or art that we think we’re respectfully amplifying, but the artist feels differently. (True personal story of mine, and I took the Instagram post down, and apologized to the artist.)
When will you listen; when will you speak out? To, “sing out Louise!” for the musical theatre lovers.
Your voice is an important part of the whole, creating chords with the cosmos.
And making music with your neighbors.
