Most people have had some sort of trauma in their life. This is due to an extremely stressful event that the brain and body struggles dealing with. Some traumas can resolve on their own, over time, while many need professional help to get over.
Many times triggers develop due to trauma. This means re-experiencing symptoms of the trauma when exposed to reminders of it. Triggers are mostly unconscious and can take us off guard. They are typically stressful and emotional like the original event.
Triggers are formed because the brain doesn’t store traumatic memories like regular memories. The amygdala, the anxiety producing part of the brain, is also the part of the brain that passes memories to the hippocampus to be categorized and filed into short and long term memory. If an event is super stressful, the amygdala goes into anxiety and doesn’t pass the memory to the hippocampus. Instead, the memory gets flung into the unconscious so the person likely doesn’t remember the memory on a conscious level. Triggers are formed based on this lack of memory processing.
Many times the body gets triggered during the day of the year the trauma occurred – even if the person doesn’t consciously remember the date. Other types of triggers are words, smells, images, movies – anything that has a similar tone to the original trauma.
The big question is: How do you deactivate these triggers so they no longer bother you?
It’s helpful to know that a trauma has happened to you. This doesn’t mean you have to remember all the details. Getting out of denial helps the body to feel acknowledged so it can now let it go. Below are some strategies that may help your body let go of triggers. Ask your Higher Self/Spirit to be in charge of your healing process.
- We all had help during traumas from our spirit guides – even if we don’t consciously remember them being there. Ask to remember this help along with asking them to bring in safety and healing so you can gently release the past. Meditating on your spirit guides is a good way to connect to them.
- Look at your ancestry, and past lives, to see what traumas have occurred. You can do this intuitively, talk to relatives who know the ancestral history, or go to someone who can help you. Crossing over ancestors and past lives, who haven’t crossed over, along with clearing the energy field, can make a big difference in how you feel. This makes it easier to work on your current trauma.
- Imagine going to the age the trauma occurred to talk to your younger self. See/ feel/ know/ hear how he/she is doing. If there’s people who hurt you, ask to be fully resolved with them. Ask your body to let this experience go as you talk to your younger self and intend to let go of the people and situations that have hurt you. You can ask your younger self to merge with you if she/he is ready which is a soul retrieval. This means bringing back any parts of your spirit lost due to the trauma. A soul retrieval creates a permanent, positive change. Many times the younger self is ready to merge with you when he/she trusts your adult self. If they are not ready, ask them to come back to you over time.
- Reverse affirmations. Your body holds onto old triggering messages due to traumas. To know what they are, journal about whatever comes into your head. This is called “free association.” After doing this, take a look at what you’ve written. What negative messages are being shown to you? Pick out three and write the exact opposite of the negative messages 20 to 30 times a day until the message feels neutralized. As soon as a negative message is neutralized, add another one to work with. Neutralizing three or less is optimal so that it speeds up how fast you transmute the messages.
We all have traumas at some point in our life journey. However, we are Divine Beings having a human experience. We are not our experiences – we can let them go. Healing yourself heals everybody and everything since we’re all interconnected. Let’s join hands and do this work together to create a better world. We are the Ones we’ve been waiting for!
Many blessings,
