As Summer approaches, and people are perhaps choosing their summer festivals, people often think that a palmist just looks at the lines on the hands but the hand as a whole will give some amazing info. The thumb and fingers while developing in the womb supply much detail on the mother’s psychological framework, diet and general health while you were in the womb. Since the time of Hippocrates, the fingernails in particular are a mine of information on this and much more.

Since ancient times each finger has been ruled by a planet and a bodily organ, and each finger has three sections or phalanges, by studying these 12 phalanges you can read up on tips for the coming year, the monks in the medieval monasteries would assign an apostle to each segment rather than a zodiac sign, the thumb taking the place of Jesus, those who had given a vow of poverty and had no rosaries, would pray on the fingers and its sections.
An old party trick of mine would be to tell the horoscope from the hands, the nails can be seen as the windows you look out from the finger, and a large nail shows a large world view. These people are often tolerant, easy going and broad minded. Small nails show a person who is more self-contained and often picky and irritable. Wide but short nails show the argumentative, pugnacious types.
Carl Jung the famous psychologist was fascinated by different shaped fingernails and could tell at a glance if a person was extrovert or introvert, the late top psychiatrist Henri Rey was a kind and learned man who ran the famous London Maudesly Hospital and said he fought all his life against biting his nails, and regarded it as a sign of extreme stress among patients, the nail is a sure giveaway in terms of temperament.
The palmistry studies in which I assisted at Whipps Cross hospital some years back, showed how to help yourself with any illness and was covered in a chapter of my book.
Did you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ and your keratin-based skin, hair and cuticles, are a reflection of your overall health. If you are deficient in anything, it’s going to affect you first internally, but eventually outside too, and the hands and nails are important diagnostic signposts.
Nail color is important with very pale nails showing anemic conditions. Pernicious anemia is the lack of vitamin B12, which is also very common especially with those aged over 50, who should be taking B Complex.
People who use iron cookpots are rarely iron deficient. Never use aluminium for cooking vessels. New evidence says not to use Teflon coated pans either as when over-heated they can give off bad chemicals.
Blue and red tinted nails are cardio-vascular or pulmonary indicators, brownish nails show elimination difficulties. This is often seen with Tamoxifen overuse and chemotherapy. Green nails are usually indicators of cardio-pulmonary difficulty or fungal infections.
The nail moons look like the moon just appearing over the horizon. The moon governs all the oceans and fluids in the earth and the nail moons will tell of blood flow and pressure. The small or Mercury finger is the most common nail without a moon and tells of circulation in the ovaries and child-bearing areas. Ancient Tibetan palmistry uses a Yin and Yang fingernail system balancing one body side to the other.
Get your hands in shape for the summer by using a non-petroleum-based hand cream last thing at night and use rubber gloves while washing up in hot water.
Palmistry lends itself extremely well to Ayurvedic medicine and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy type counselling.
Are You Deficient?
- When you have inadequate stomach acid, often from taking long-term antacids, your fingernails can develop ridges. Lengthwise ridges are seen in nutritional depletion and in many illnesses. The finger most affected shows the means for correction. A deep sideways ridge shows an illness or shock or even a particularly bad women’s period and can be timed on the nail to when this occurred.
- Poor nail health and hair loss can be due to inadequate folic acid, B vitamins and essential fatty acid intake. A lack of B12 Cobalamin can be behind memory loss, difficulty in walking, numbness in fingers and toes depression or dementia.
- Some years ago it was found that New Forest ponies were losing all their hair. This made winters especially severe for them. A local Homeopath suggested sprinkling a small amount of zinc and selenium on the grass. It was found that their coats improved dramatically. If your nails and hair are poor give it a go.
- If you have arthritic joint stiffness, the Ancient Greeks would recommend a copper disc in your shoe against your bare foot, or even taped to the stiff joint. It works, try it. Maybe those ancients did know a thing or two after all?
