This week finds me writing to y’all from my backyard with a chorus of crows.
At first, earlier this week, my sweetie and I thought we had an injured crow in our yard. Ones in the trees were squawking loudly every time we’d come out and the one on the ground just walked and hopped a bit.
We put out some food and a water bowl. Contacted the Portland Audubon Society.
Found out, we don’t have an injured crow in our backyard, we have a youngster that hasn’t learned how to fly yet! Although they are doing a great job hopping up on our wood pile and taking mini flights up and down.
Focus off of the crows and onto Card of the Week!
Lua Tarot by Maree Bento was calling out – and was one of the decks working it yesterday at Festival de Fronteriza’s! So delightful to support people, theatre, and the new community center Alder Commons. She gives us:
The Hermit.
Don’t be afraid to be alone.
Don’t be afraid of the darkness, sometimes it’s in the dark, quiet, hibernation time – still important for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere who are getting a lot of daylight hours! Sometimes especially important if we’re going to be in large crowds of people – that we recharge ourselves. Focus on our light, our gifts, how we want to help illuminate the world. As Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman writes,
“For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
Takeoyur private time, your literal or metaphorical time to go down into your inner caves – maybe plan an intentional visit to some caves in your area.
I am noticing the detail of our Hermit’s right hand, how it looks like it could be getting ready to snuff the candle out, saving the little bit of wax and wick that’s left, plunging herself into darkness for a time. Choosing to do so to conserve resources.
Or maybe the wick fell over and she’s righting it so the light won’t snuff out, drowned by liquid wax.
Although the deck’s author disagrees with me and says that the wizened woman has just lit the candle.
Likely, we’ll never know for certain what the original wood carving artist from the 1800’s intended here. We’ll only have our imaginations and speculations.
And an invitation to take or make, our alone time.

No, I’m not doing any intentional speculations or tie in’s with yesterday’s July 4th, Independence Day in the US. Given how many people’s independence is actively being taken away, I am even more disgusted with my country of origin’s political structures. My celebrations will be more of a Hermit variety, continuing actively working for and within different economic structures and mutual aid, for a beautiful, equitable, sustainable world in a timely fashion.
