I have good news and bad news. The trick is that they are the same thing. We are humans.

There are magnificent benefits with that truth. We are conscious co-creators. We have imagination. We have vision, enthusiasm, hopes, and dreams. Moreover, we have the ability to take action on our imagination. We can work to ground that vision into reality. We can use our enthusiasm to motivate us to action. Hope can keep us inspired. Dreams, actualized, can make all of this craziness worth it.

But then there is the liability. That’s the bad news. Imagination doesn’t immediately and simply become reality. Vision does not immediately offer a step-by-step process. Enthusiasm can be fleeting. Hope and nickel won’t get you a cup of coffee. Nothing is more painful than one’s dreams crashing into disillusionment.

This human life is no joke. It doesn’t matter if you’re a multimillionaire or destitute on the street, you’re a human having experiences, complete with challenges. We experience suffering. We experience pain, ache, hurt, and the sad and painful realization that this life is imperfect.

And that’s where we are to find the perfection.

Wherever we are, whatever our situation, whatever “level or degree” of suffering we may currently be experiencing must, and I repeat, must be perceived as a part of being a human, which must be tended to with as little hyper-emotional reactivity as possible.

I know that’s easy to say. I’m having a hard time swallowing that myself. That’s not easy for me to hear, let alone accomplish. But it’s the truth. This is a life where, regardless of our hopes, dreams, imagination, and vision, we must still show up, pay the bills, chop wood, carry water, and remember our ZIP Code.

We can’t stop the tomatoes from ripening. They need to be harvested. We can’t stop the leaves from falling. The seasons must change. We can’t always change our circumstances by wishing them away. We must take action. We must make changes. We must tend to the tomatoes and allow the leaves to fall. We must show up and do the work.

So, for this New Moon, commit to yourself. Commit to a healthy and wise assessment and understanding of your current situation. Couple that with a realistic vision of what you want to accomplish, where you want to go, what you want to fix, heal, repair, or remediate, and then take your appropriate steps to make those effective changes with as little fear, sorrow, or anger as possible. (Dreamy, I know, but that’s the reality.)

We are preparing ourselves for whatever our next level is. We must show up and deliberately engage our lives. Sweat and tears may occur. Aching muscles and exhaustion come with the territory. But the end result will be the life we have always imagined.

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost, that is where they belong. Now, put the foundations under them.”

Engage those words of Henry David Thoreau to the best of your ability, and all will be well.
