Christmas holidays are a great blessing. Even if your religious faith does not recognize Christmas, it is nevertheless a wonderful opportunity for families to unite and celebrate their collective presence on earth.
I don’t know about you, but I have often wondered why I came into this world through my family. From the billions of families around the world through which I could have emerged, why did divine Spirit select my family specifically? What did I come to learn from members of my family? And, what did I come to give them?
Because divine Spirit makes no mistakes, there must be an excellent reason why you, too, came into this world through your own family, even if you feel it was a fatal divine error. During your contemplations, meditations or prayers this holiday season, ask inwardly: Why did Divine Spirit bring me into this world through my particular family? What did I come to learn from them? What did I come to give them?
Then relax and open your heart and mind to the infiltration of divine mystery. Continue with this exercise until you begin to recognize God’s relentless generosities as manifested through your family.
Sometimes people disassociate themselves from their family in the name of spirituality. This is not necessary. Family can provide the foundation or grounding necessary for your spiritual unfoldment. There is a saying that "charity begins at home." If one is really spiritual, that spirituality should first be demonstrated at home. What is the point of harboring and preaching lofty spiritual ideas if you are not even in speaking terms with your spouse or loved ones?
Our test is whether or not we can become "love in action" within our own families. The family unit is a fabulous testing ground for soul. At the same time, it is one of the greatest spiritual gifts we have on earth. Family accepts you when it seems as though the entire world has rejected you. When all doors are closed, the family door is always open. Even if you have not been in touch with your family for sometime, and they suddenly receive news of your misfortune, they are still willing to come to your aid – to help scrape you off the ground, dust you off and rejuvenate you, to the best of their capability. Family is an incredible spiritual gift. Cherish it!
As you visit or celebrate with your families during this holiday season, give the best gifts you can afford, or just show up and give the gift of your presence. Thank each member of your family for their support – which you may not be consciously aware of – in your courageous unfoldment as soul.
