Turning On the Light

Have you ever been in a deep sleep only to wake up to the urgency of having to go to the bathroom? Walking in the dark, with your eyes almost closed because you don’t want to turn on the light, and fully wake up because then you won’t be able to go back to sleep. Fumbling in the dark, you stub your toe, hit your elbow on the wall and it takes you 15 minutes to find the toilet seat because you are too stubborn to turn on the light?

I can totally relate that whole story to the story of my spiritual journey. I felt an urgency, but I didn’t want to fully wake up, because if I did, I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep. The deep sleep of what I knew my life to be… the being comfortable with the uncomfortable. I didn’t want to “turn on the light” but fumbled around in the dark cursing and swearing and making everything 100 times harder than it needed to be but would refuse to turn on the light, because once the light was on, once I could see my way, there was no going back to the dark.

Sometimes we think we are more comfortable in the dark, half awake. It’s not until we turn on the light that we are amazed at how easy it is to find our way. That’s the spiritual awakening. That’s the spiritual journey. To turn on the light and to leave the dark behind.

In love and in light and everything bright and beautiful,
Holly
