Tarot from Conscience (or the Traveling Moth)
A space for tarot reflection for the day, week, or moment it comes across your screen. Each of these is reworked intentionally for The Edge, from the egregore of GroupTarot’s Card of the Week, to center education, diversity, and intuition.

Now that I am back in Portland, my other hat – of a theatre professional – is in full swing and had all my energy yesterday.
It’s very Two of Pentacles, especially as illustrated by Joanna Nelson in 78 Artists Cirque du Tarot. Rather than balancing work/life balance, as this card often indicates, it comes to mind because of juggling two work loves – theatre and tarot. And sometimes grabbing snack food in lieu of good food! Oh that large looming bag of popcorn in the distance. Sooooo much easier to grab a handful rather than make a salad, even though I gather great satisfaction adding fresh herbs from my garden. That I am reunited with!
Today, I’m back in my beautiful backyard. It’s cool and cloudy. A gentle breeze is playing through the leaves of our mostly green maple, although the seed pods are starting to turn a toasty color at their helicopter tips and the green leaves are beginning to curl.
The Gentle Creatures Wisdom Deck by Arwen Lynch Poe and Dan May is back with us today, because I feel the world, an I, need some extra gentleness.
In addition to what the socials have shown – please do follow me on Insta – the past few days have put me through an emotional wringer.
Some of my friends and colleagues have had similar experiences.
Yep, your tarot reader, with whom you share your life and work, is also having a very human experience, full of it’s Wheel of Fortune ups and downs.
Have you ever thought of your life in tarot cards? It’s a great way to put together meanings as you’re learning. Just make sure to check your own biases.
Back to Card of the Week…
Thinking, what will help us navigate this week? We’re given,
Gift.
Gods, this hits me in the feels. I won’t go into all the ways this is perfect for my personal situation, as I have no desire to project onto you, dear reader. For those of you here because you’re learning tarot, this is one of the most important and hardest practices being a reader – separating out your biases, assumptions, projections, and expectations, to be true and honest to the cards and the querent.
It is a daily practice. And in many ways, a gift of curiosity and self knowledge.
Our creature and our human both hold butterflies in opposite directions.
Standing in a similar plane yet separated by forest.
Wind ruffles their hair and fur.
There is the old adage, if you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s meant to be. Will the butterflies leave? Will they return? They have a relatively short life cycle compared to humans and redwoods.
Can the bipedals traverse the forest that separates them? Maybe.
May there be comfort knowing someone else is going through similar situations from a different place? Yes.
There is also a reminder that you are a gift. Whether you identify with the blue furry creature, either butterfly, the human, the clouds, the trees in the forest, or snowflakes (raindrops?) gently coming down, you are a gift.
It can be trite and condescending to tell someone else going through a painful set of circumstances that “it may be a gift in disguise.” When talking with others, this may do more harm than good.
When it is a thought we have about ourselves, a practice of hope, not knowing how the pain may turn into a gift, it’s a different emotional alchemy. Only you know this about your set of circumstances.
And all of this could be colored by my own blue mood!
Your experience of Gift may be much more literal – receiving and/or giving a gift – of yourself or of someone else.
Arwen writes about both creatures as they lovingly gaze at their different butterflies, both know a secret they are willing to share with you. When you receive this card, ask yourself if you are truly enjoying what is yours? Or do you sometimes furtively glance at someone else, thinking they have something better… Celebrate the unique being that is yourself. When you hold out your hand to share rather than to grasp, you become the person you were meant to be.
Share rather than grasp, yes.
