Restocking the Pharmacy of the Body

The ever-expanding pharmacopeia of time-tested techniques, natural remedies and alternative pain killers is a complicated skein of dos and don’ts that would tangle any health wizard’s weave.

For example, if you’re like me, you still get tangled by the old adage “feed a cold, starve a fever.” I’m guessing at least half of you said it’s the other way around. Well, we’re all wrong. You should never starve anything when it comes to your body. Your body needs nutrients to combat either bug.

Foods rich in beta-carotene, Vitamins C and E support anti-oxidant production, which in turn helps your immune system battle the free-radicals that are shredding cell membranes throughout the body. Raw fruits and vegetables like spinach, carrots, peppers and cantaloupe are your best source of anti-oxidants. Consequently, whenever I feel a cold coming on, I prepare a spinach and kale salad dressed up with red, yellow or green peppers and sunflower seeds. This meal is high in magnesium, folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and beta-carotene, making it a far better choice for fighting a cold than a glass of orange juice, which is almost pure sugar. Tossed gently with bio-flavonoid rich lemon juice and red onion and I’m feeding the body just what it needs to be on my feet again! Add loads of water, hot green tea and steaming hot carrot-ginger soup and my body pharmacy is stocked to combat any cold or fever.

To stay healthy, our bodies need foods rich in glutathione, phytochemicals and zinc. You’ll find glutathione in the pulp closest to the rind of a watermelon, spinach and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower. I love making healthy “mashed” cauliflower instead of potatoes. I just steam the head of cauliflower, put in a tablespoon of mayo and 1/2 cup of milk (rice milk works well), salt and pepper to taste and mash them up together. Works wonders with a picky person who is trying to lose weight.

Exercise, plenty of sleep, prayer and diet are just the beginning of my regimen to keep my body’s pharmacy well-stocked. I also make sure I replenish my redox signaling molecules by taking 4 ounces of Asea Redox Supplement daily. Redox-signaling molecules (RSMs) are the cellular messengers that tell the immune system to get into gear when a cell is threatened, sickly or just needs replacing. Unfortunately, the older we get the fewer of these messengers from the mitochondria we make. This means I could eat a room full of spinach and blueberries and not get the anti-oxidant or glutathione I’m looking for. Those foods need RSMs to “turn on” the anti-oxidants and glutathione nutrients. That’s why I never let a day go by without adding these molecules to my body’s pharmacy.

These critical messengers may be why I haven’t had a cold or flu in more than three years. Put another way, imagine trying to make an emergency call using your cell phone in an area where there are no cell towers. That’s right, no signal. RSMs are the body’s cell towers. They get the message to the fire department (immune system), which sends help to put out the fire. All disease is the result of a redox imbalance, and Asea helps bring your body into balance by partnering with the nutrients in your body’s pharmacy to repair, replace and restore damaged cells.

Finally, I drink half my body weight in ounces of water a day. I weigh 180, so I drink 90 ounces of water. This flushes the toxins, dead cells and cell debris that my diet, exercise and Asea generate as they work to keep me in tip-top shape.

Because my body’s immune system requires a well-stocked pharmacy to be at my best, I make sure it’s always supplied with a masterfully balanced blend of diet, exercise, sleep and supplements to achieve and maintain optimal health.
